Statistics on Racism in the Theatre Industry – depressing in its unsurprisingness

If you’ve gone to see any theatre at all lately, you may or may not notice that there’s basically no minorities on stage. Like, ever.

Yes, just to reiterate, I am saying this as a white person. But it’s true!

If you like info graphics, this great report from the Asian American Performers Action Coalition (AAPAC), which studied casting statistics from several theatres in NYC in the 2011/2012 season, is chock full of nice graphs.

It’s not like this topic has never been discussed before.

Good for AAPAC, though. There’s something about having maths backing up your claims that makes them seem more valid in our white dominated patriarchal society. I wish we could just listen to and sympathize with self-reported incidents of racism, or feelings that maybe the industry is racist, but we can’t. Because you know, our culture is racist.
